How sad? PM Meles and his advisors have made a poor judgment in initiating and organizing this artificial demonstration.
This EPRDF sponsored event is an insult to our intelligence.
I am one of those Ethiopians who have held the diaspora "opposition" with contempt it deserves especially those in the USA. Some of these extremist hate filled and ignorant "opposition" members have poisoned the Ethiopian political environment so much that even normal non-political activities such as social gatherings and church prayers have been reduced to "sniper alley" where Ethiopians have been reduced to chose between one ethnic group over another one friend over another one church over another.
Even with such terrible record of the diaspora opposition, the Ethiopian regime is wrong to organize such a manipulated demonstration. If the Meles government really wants to tackle those extremist diaspora opposition then it must stop giving ammunition to them. One such ammunition is the attacks on moderate oppositions who stand for peaceful change in Ethiopia, such as EDP. If the Meles government started to address some of the questions raised by peaceful and responsible parties such as EDP and allow them to take part fully in the country's political process then millions in the diaspora will see hope and start to dissociate themselves from the extremist. The government is responsible for strengthen destructive elements in the diaspora by its refusal to accommodate the moderate and responsible groups such as EDP.
It is time for EPRDF to look in the mirror and make some changes if it wants to curtail the rising support for diaspora extremists. EPRDF cannot win this battle in the diaspora by just organizing demonstration. I will be the first one to take on the diaspora extremist if the legitimate and responsible voices such as EDP are given a voice in the political process.
From EPRDF own past experience with the once all powerful Derg that force and Propaganda has its limit, in fact it can be the source of its weakness which can result in its rapid downfall.
Open, equal and legal political environment IN ETHIOPIA is the best cure to the problem of diaspora extremist!
In the mean, time people like me will watch on the side lines until EPRDF comes into its sense for the sake of its own survival. I hold no hope that minority of diaspora extremist will be any more palatable than they have been in the past, they will never change.
So I say, come on PM Meles AND THE CABINET, start to use your heads' and not your mouth or fist!
